Selecting a meaningful, realistic quit date

  • Do not take setting a quit date lightly - mentally prepare yourself for this major adjustment.
  • Remember, there is no "perfect" time to quit.
  • Pick a day that doesn't have any built in problems. Try to avoid the holidays, pick a time that is very typical of your regular life.
  • Don't pick tomorrow as your quit date. There are things you need to do to prepare for quitting.
  • 1-3 weeks allows time to get used to the idea of quitting. Line up family and friends for support, practice habit breaking and talk to your doctor about NRT or quitting-tobacco medications.
  • Be sure to celebrate accomplishing this feat - you've come so far and have the ability to remain successful.
